Any products with 11.1 Audyssey DSX?

do any dsx products decode both the height and with channels?and if so are there any shipping models that pre out so another amp can be used.I would love to implament both,I was also wonder do the receivers with back surrounds still out put those signals when dsx is engaged?in other words can I have my cake and eat it too.7.2 channel surround plus the additional 4 dsx channels playing back at the same time?

The only model that currently provides DSX Wide and Height channels simultaneously is the Denon AVR-4810CI. It requires an external 2-ch amp for the Heights as they are only available at the line-outputs (the AVR only has 9 ch. of amplification). But, it will give you 11 channels (traditional 7.1 + 4 DSX channels).

All other DSX models currently provide DSX Wide or Height channels that are selectable. We expect more models to start becoming available with all 4 DSX channels in the future.

I see that it has been a year since this was updated.  Any new word on an 11.1/11.2 capable A/V Receiver or Pre/Pro that can run all channels at once?  My main interest is in either Intregra or its little brother, Onkyo, but if Denon beats them to the punch, well...

Currently there are two such products: Denon 4810 and Denon 4311.  They have 9 amp channels and the additional 2 channels require an external stereo amp.  No word on other products yet...

Can you confirm whether the 4311 will output all 11.1 channels simultaneously through pre-amp outputs?

Also I noticed that the Marantz AV7005 has 11.1 pre-amp outputs. Is this all channels simultaneously? Could there be others that do this?

Yes, the Denon 4311 can output 11 channels.  The Heights are available from a pre-out and require an external 2-ch amplifier.  The Denon 4810 operates the same way.  These are the only two units that can perform 11 ch. DSX playback.  The Marantz is a 7.1 product.

Can you tell me from a technical/practical standpoint, is it beneficial to have 11.1 output? It seems like others would be doing this 11.1 were desirable over 9.1 / 7.1 / 5.1. What kind of setup would be ideal for a dedicated theater?

It is highly beneficial because the Wide and Height channels are reproducing the necessary acoustical and perceptual cues to expand the perception of the soundstage.  More info and required placement of speakers here:

Any newer models out yet featuring the capability of running all 11.1 or 11.2 channels?

Okay, thanks for checking.   Ready to buy whenever a manufacturer answers the consumer's call for this...

Can you confirm if the latest products from Onkyo TX-NR1009 / TX-NR3009 / TX-NR5009 has outputs for all 11.2. Thanks in advance.

I can't confirm that.  Onkyo has not yet announced any 11.2 capable products.

I can highly recommend the Denon 4311CI for 11.2 play back.  I have had this unit for a little over a month running 9.1 and love it.  I am using heights and wides with one set of rears.  We did do some testing with an external amp running the mains and the AVR handling the other 9 channels with no issues.  Unfortunately, my room config doesn't allow for the back rears.

Sorry for the confusion. The question was whether TX-NR3009 receiver and / or TX-NR5009 is full support for 11 channels of playback using an external 2-channel amplifiator.

There are no Onkyo products that support all 11 DSX channels at this time.

Because according to a Norway website , they said only support MAX 9 ch only ! Can u verify it for me ? The web site is here : http://www.hifiklubben.no/produkter/tilbehor/annet-tilbehor/denon_-avc-a1hdavp-a1hd-3dhdmi-14_oppgradering.htm

[Denon 4311] "We did do some testing with an external amp running the mains and the AVR handling the other 9 channels with no issues."

Will it really run 2 fronts on external amp, and other 9 channels on internal amps? From what Chris has said, it seems the external amp must be on the heights.

"It requires an external 2-ch amp for the Heights as they are only available at the line-outputs"

But if speaker-outs and preamp-outs are assignable so that external amp can be on fronts, then it would work much better.

With the 4311 you can pick "height" or "front" when you pick "ext. Amp"

I picked up a rotel 5 channel amp and it came in the mail today so I was able to do this permanently after I posted.  It works no problem.  I was hoping to use all 5 channels across the front but that is a NO go unless you switch everything to pre amp mode as far as I can tell.  Not an issue as I plan to use the other channels as mono from the amp for zones 2+3.

Brad, you CAN use an external amp(s) for ANY number of channels, without using pre-amp mode.    The pre-amp outputs are always on and working,  so you simply hook the amps up to them, and hook the speakers you desire to externally amplify to the external amp, rather than the receiver.

Basically, the 4311 works like any other receiver with pre-amp outputs,  it's the darn optional "Pre-amp" mode that is confusing people.   It should just be ignored by most people.

Thanks Brent.  I eventually figured that out.  It's too bad that Denon didn't make all the amps assignable.  I thought I read that some of the older models did this.  It would be  a great feature for multi zone audio.

Yes, that would be a nice feature.   On the other hand, at least Denon actually makes a full 11.2 DSX receiver.    Something no other manufacturer has done, even after the technology has been available for 3 years now.

When using the Denon 4311 for 11.1 once you have connected the external amp for the other two channels when you adjust the volume on the 4311 does that also change the volume for the other two channels? Or do you have to adjust the volume on the last two channels on the external amp?

all my external amps don't have volume controls.  Are you trying to run it through a receiver?

I do not have a setup as yet but am thinking about how to do 11.1 since I have the speakers setup but only have a 9.2 amp. I would not want to invest in the Denon unless the volume control was done through one control instead of two. So it sounds like what you are saying is that the Denon is basically a preamp for the last two channels that run through the outboard amps who volume is controlled by the Denon not the outboard amps? Or should I just wait for new models to come out that have true 11.2 native? Any recommendation on what to use for the auxilary amps?

I would be very surprised if volume could not be controlled by the Denon. That would make the whole idea almost useless if you had to change more than one volume control. It would throw off the channel balance every time. I think it's safe to say that main volume controls all.

Also I think you would want to put your front L/R channels on an external 2-channel amp, and run everything else from the receiver's amp. Or better yet use a 3-channel external and include the center channel. This would be ideal I think, if someone with experience can confirm please...

As far as a recommendation, my first thought goes to  http://emotiva.com/xpa3.shtm. Emotiva makes some hefty amplifiers and they are affordable. The XPA-3 is 200Wx3 at 8 ohm, currently on sale at $599. Put your front mains and center channel on this for plenty of stereo music power, and also support the three most important channels for home theater, while also enabling 11-channel surround.

The AVR4311 most definitely controls all the volumes of the external amps.  It can be ran in pre-amp mode that turns off ALL the internal amplifiers so you would need 11 external amp channels.  Or you can choose to turn off the fronts L+R only and use an external amp for those and an internal for the rest.  Or you can use an external amp for the rear surrounds and all internal for the rest.  The nice things is I have also confirmed that the pre-outs are active all the time if you choose to use them.  The Denon does all the control no matter what you hook up to it.

Austin has a great suggestion with the Emotiva and running all three front channels off of it.  This is what I was doing with three channels of my 5 channel Rotel. (using the other 2 channels for a second zone)   The lower cost solution is to get an inexpensive 2 ch amp to run the rear surrounds off of it as the rears are not that demanding and you could get away with less power IMO.

So do you think Austin's suggestion would work with the Onkyo TX-NR5008 that I already have? I have Definitive BP7002s for the front l/r and a Definitive CLR2002 for the center. The front wide and highs l/r are Definitive Mythos 2s. The surrounds are all inceiling Boston Acoustics sorry forgot the model:(
