Denon 3808CI - add Pro Kit or AS-EQ1 ?

I have a Denon AVR-3808CI (which has MultEQ XT) with the latest firmware and Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume. I am pretty happy with the sound.

I just sold my two vented Velodyne subwoofers and am replacing them with two Elemental Designs A3S-250 subwoofers (10" sealed). I have Mirage Omnisat v2 floorstanding L and R speakers, Omnisat v2 center, and Omnisat v3 surrounds.

My room is far from ideal acoustically. One of my goals in replacing the vented subs with sealed subs is to get flatter bass response that is not bloated or boomy.

I have considered getting either the AS-EQ1 or the MultEQ Pro Kit. The Pro Kit would probably benefit the overall sound more and the bass less, and the AS-EQ1 would probably benefit the bass more. I am correct in thinking this?

Which do you think would be the better investment or yield the most bang for my buck?

Would there be a significant difference in bass flatness between the MultEQ Pro Kit and the AS-EQ1?

    It's really difficult to answer this without having measurements from your room.  In general, the biggest problems in small rooms happen in the lower frequencies so I would think that fixing the bass first would give you the best improvement.  MultEQ Pro is software that gives you more accurate measurements because of the pro mic, the ability to store and recall measurements, and the ability to make adjustments to the target curve.  However, the filter resolution is not changed because these filters still have to run on the same built-in processor in the AVR.  By moving the sub to a dedicated processor you will benefit from MultEQ XT filters that have much higher resolution and produce a flatter bass response.

    The receiver came with an Audyssey mic. The AS-EQ1 comes with a similar mic. In this setup, couldn't differences in the microphones result in differences between the two?

     

    If I got the Pro Kit and the Sub Equalizer, I could use the mic from the Pro Kit for both, which shoud result in better matching of the two, correct?

    It would seem logical that having both the receiver and the sub equalizer using a single measuring device (microphone) would result in the receiver and sub EQ getting more similar measurement data, which would result in a better integration between the speakers and subs.

    Do you think this would make a minimal or significant difference? Ever test this?

    The Pro Kit mic can't be used with the AS-EQ1.  Only with the Audyssey Sub Equalizer.  Using the same Audyssey consumer mic for both measurements is a good idea for the reasons you state.

    Wouldn't an even better scenario be to use the Pro Kit mic with the receiver and the Audyssey Sub EQ?

    Sure.  If you have a Audyssey Pro Kit and an AVR that is installer-ready then that would be the better scenario.
