Subwoofer not detected

The reason the signal is running louder is that Audyssey had trouble detecting it with the correct signal to noise ratio. This could happen if there is acoustical low frequency noise or electrical noise in the system. For example a computer power supply, light dimmers, and even interference from cable or satellite set top boxes. In such cases we recommend unplugging all the other components when running the calibration.

thank you very much for your fast response. Just for info, the Onkyo is connected to the amps with balanced connections. I don't have satellite/DTV set top boxes on my theater, but you are right: I've had the light dimmer on when performing the calibration. I'll try to repeat the calibration with everything turned off and I'll keep you informed about the results.

I've just finished to run Audyssey and, again, unsuccessfully. This time I've turned off my cell phone, my PC and above all the light dimmer (I've detached physically from the mains) but the results are the same as before: no subwoofer has been detected. just for adding infos, my amplifiers are all switching technology EMC compliant and I think they are correctly shielded. The mic cable don't run near them, anyway. What do you think about?

I'm happy to tell you that I've found what the problem is: a faulty microphone! My lucky, in this case, has been to have a Onkyo TX-SR507 on my living room, so I've tried to use his mic to calibrate my theater and this time the subwoofer has been detected and everything has worked fine.

Now I will try to have a mic replacement from Onkyo (my processor is under warranty).

just a quick update: after having tried to make a full 8 points calibration, the subwoofer again has not been detected using also the 2nd mic.

I've had the possibility to check both the mics with a reference microphone and both are performing well.

More on this, I've tried to use the PR-SC5507's mic in my living room with the TX-SR507 and all has worked fine.

I think we are back on some kind of electrical noise (but everything is turned off) or maibe a fault on the processor (BTW, the penultimate firmware is reported to improve subwoofer detection, but I've the lastest version)

Now I'll try to contact the Onkyo support

Are you perhaps using an Uninterruptible Power Supply.  I recently heard from another user that was having problems with noise that were due to a faulty UPS.

currently I don't have an UPS, maybe in the future but only for the projector. Maybe I can try with a filter on mains for the processor.

I think I've found the solution to my problem, at last!

Let me start to tell you that I've moved the PR-SC5507 on my living room and run Audyssey without any problem: on every attempt the subwoofer (an active one) has been detected.

So, I've put back the PR-SC5507 on my HT and I've tried to apply a low pass filter at 200Hz on my subwoofer (L-R 4th order, via loudspeaker management system) and WOW, this time everything run smoothly and the subwoofer has been detected without problems!

Maybe the mid frequency response of the unfiltered sub lead Audyssey to misunderstanding the loudspeaker type.

Now, I've only a question more: do you think is better to leave the 200Hz LP active after the Audyssey setup or I can defeat him? (I set the LFE's LP at 80Hz on my processor, anyway)

Hi Davide,

I don't think you need the 200 Hz lowpass after calibration is finished.  The bass management system in the 5507 will take care of the filters correctly.
