Dynamic Volume (Midnight) On

Dynamic Volume was added after Denon released the first manual and so they released an addendum that describes it (download it here http://www.usa.denon.com/AVP-A1HDCI_AVR-5308CI-OM-Addendum-E_109.pdf). The purpose of Dynamic Volume is to control the dynamic range so that large variations in volume are avoided. It comes with three settings (Day, Evening, and Midnight) that increasingly constrain the dynamic range for late night listening.

Dynamic Volume requires Dynamic EQ to be on so that when the volume is turned down, the frequency response is adjusted to match human perception. It is the only control of its kind that does that correctly.

In situations where you don't care about dynamic range control, you should just have Dynamic EQ on so that the response is correct at the volume setting you have selected.

The Night function is an antiquated range limiter that causes pumping artifacts and so we require that it is turned off when our more advanced algorithms are running.

To control Dynamic Volume settings, see page 7 of the addendum.  Go to the Setup Menu, then Parameters-->Audio-->Audyssey Settings

You will see the Dynamic Volume menu there. You can turn it on and off or select one of the modes with your remote when it's on. I recommend Evening if you want to use it.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm about to buy a new AVR with audyssey and specifically need a dynamic mode for listening at night, and according to the statement above, dynamic volume and dynamic EQ can not be used together? Is that correct?

They absolutely can be used together.  In fact they must be used together for proper performance.  When the volume is turned down (either by the user or by Dynamic Volume), it is necessary to make adjustments to the frequency response to adjust for human hearing differences at lower volumes.  That's what Dynamic EQ does.

I must have mis read, I saw the bit above about "The Night function is an.....we require that it is turned off when..." and I assumed night mode was your night mode when infact I think it now means the amps own night mode? Is that correct.

Ps do you know if I buy an AVR with MultiEqXT etc an updates are later released, do all users get updates for free or are they only released on newer models?

Correct: the Night Mode is another confusing name for an old style audio limiter that often causes artifacts.  

Updates are up to every manufacturer.  Some release them and some don't and they each decide what models to do it for.

Hello Chris,

Need your help to setup the sound system correctly. I am using HKTS 20 5.1 speakers with denon 1911. I configured the Audyssey last week as per instructions but I am not getting the desired sound. The sound shrills when words with S, SH  are spoken which is irritating for the ears. The subwoofer beats are also very unpleasent. I have connected the SW port from AVR to LFE point in SW.

Also need to know the best settings for multiEQ and Dynamic volume.

Kindly help fixing it, I know I have a good AVR, just need to calibrate it correctly.

Hi Shoab,

The first place to start is to make sure you are taking the microphone measurements correctly. If you are placing the microphone too far to the side, this can cause problems. Please look here for placement tips:

After calibration is finished, set MultEQ to the Audyssey Ref. curve. Turn on Dynamic EQ. Dynamic Volume should be used for late night listening (set to Evening or Midnight).

Finally, please note that the final results will only be as good as the speakers allow...
