MultEQ vs 2EQ + 2.0 system with large front speakers

MultEQ has the following benefits over 2EQ:

1. It produces higher resolution correction filters than 2EQ and so it will correct the lower frequency range of the satellite speakers

2. It applies acoustical correction to the subwoofer channel (2EQ does not)

3. It captures information at 6 positions in the listening area

Chris,  I need further explanations:

ad.1: Currently I don't have any satellites (maybe rears in the future)

ad.2: I won't be using subwoofer channel (my fronts produce a lot of bass)

So, will there be a significant difference for me between 2EQ and MultEQ?

Satellites is what the speakers are called in a surround system.  So hopefully you have them! :-)

Yes, there is still a significant difference even if you don't have a subwoofer.  MultEQ will be able to make corrections more precisely than 2EQ (points 1 and 3 above).

I'm in similar situation. My setup is Denon AVR-590 with just two JBL towers. At its current state, the sound from music cd generally sounds very hollow and far away. Input is from coaxial. Should I still use Audyssey setup and MultEQ with just two towers? Is there a certain surround mode works best? What's the best setting/target curve? I have the impression that Audyssey is for 5.1 or 7.1 setup only.

Joe, if you are getting hollow sound it is a sure sign that something is wrong with one or both of the speakers.  If one of the drivers is not working then MultEQ will try to make up for that hole by putting in a boost.  This will sound like what you are hearing.

MultEQ has nothing to do with what surround mode you are using.  MultEQ is not for 5.1 or 7.1 only.  It works for any number of speakers.  It simply measures the speakers individually and creates a correction filter to undo the acoustical problems in the room that each speaker faces.

Please check each driver in your speakers to make sure it is producing sound.
