Audyssey setup for a small room

Hi. My HT room is rather small - roughly 9ft x 14ft. The TV is mounted in the middle of the 14ft wall and I'm sitting directly across it. I have a 5.0 setup with bookshelf speakers and 2 dipole speakers mounted on the wall above my head (to the left and right). I do not have a subwoofer.

 

Because the room is so small, how many listening positions do I need for the Audyssey setup in my AVR? How far apart should the listening positions be and what is the minimum distance from the speakers?

 

Does Audyssey even work in a small room? Should I turn it off instead for better results?

    Hi Alfred,

    Yes, Audyssey will work just fine in any size room.  In fact smaller rooms have bigger acoustical problems than larger ones so it's needed even more.  Please take a look here for microphone placement: http://www.audyssey.com/audio-technology/multeq/how-to

    You should use all available mic positions even if you only have one listening seat.  The algorithm needs to collect information from the room to create the correction filters.

    Hi Chris,

    I am struggling to get the Audyssey to setup Correctly in a smallish room. It just keeps on saying calculating after all tests are done on Onkyo 809 amp.

    Hi Tom, the size of the room doesn't matter.  It sounds like there may be a problem with the AVR.  Perhaps the digital board.  Have you tried a full re-set of the microprocessor?  The manual tells you how to do that by holding down buttons on the front panel.  If that doesn't solve it, I'm afraid you will have to check with Onkyo Service...

    My Integra DHC 80.2 took a very long time to calculate (maybe 15+ minutes?) but it eventually finished.  So it may just take being patient (which is hard).

    I wish there is some way to view the equalization settings, so that i can see if changing speaker position, or decor helps to minimize the amount of processing.

    15 minutes seems pretty long, but as long as it's done you're fine.  We make the EQ filter data available, but so far only Denon has decided to show it in the OSD.
