Onkyo x09 series FW update Audyssey problem?

Hi Chris,

Over on AVS a few users with x09 series Onkyo AVRs, specifically 709 and 3009 so far, have commented that since doing the December 2011 FW update, their sound has, and I quote, "started to resemble a cheap AM radio". The users have repeated their (previously good) Audyssey calibrations and have found the same result. However, on switching to the MUSIC curve, their former listening glory has returned. In the absence of any other changes, it would seem to point to something in the FW update that is causing the problem. Given that Onkyo have had issues with FW updates in the past, do you know of any recent FW changes that could cause the described effect, and why would switching to the Music curve fix it?

I will be updating the FW on my own 5509 soon so that I can use the Pro kit I have on order and I would hate to think there is a bug. Any comments gratefully received, as always. Thanks, Keith

I am not aware of any issues with the firmware update on these models.

Thanks Chris. Would you have any comment to make on why their selecting the Music curve seems to restore their previously good Audyssey-calibrated SQ?

    Kind Regards,

    Keith

Music is the Audyssey Flat curve and Movie is what Onkyo calls the Audyssey Ref. curve.  I will ask our test group to look into this.

I have the Onkyo Ht-RC370. I too am experiencing a "tin can effect". From what I can tell(don't have the equipment to measure) it seems as if the mids have been reduced & the higher frequencies have been raised. Not sure what is going on. The movie curve is the one that seems off, where the music(flat curve) seems fine.

Chris, there are reports about this alleged issue now on various threads over at AVS. Most people seem to be saying it all started after they updated the FW to the latest Onkyo version, especially on the x09 series. I know how these things can take hold and become The Word, but there does seem to be some momentum to it. Are Onkyo 100% sure that their latest firmware is not breaking Audyssey somehow?  After all, they have form ;)

Neither our QA team nor Onkyo have been able to reproduce this yet.  We are actively tracking it and will keep everyone posted.

Have just submitted a request concerning problem with Audyssey and my Onkyo Pr-Sc5009.

When starting Audyssey setup (simpel setup), it simply calculates forever.  In full/advanced setup it stops when starting "measurement 2".   In both cases I have to unplug the mic to stop the (indefinate) process.  1) It's not the mic (tried two), 2) I have tried to factory reset + unplug current:  same faulty result/behaviour, 3) It's not my "incompentence" as I have made dozens of Audyssey set-ups in the past on both "Onkyo "886" and "5508" with no problems.

Hope to have a diagnose/solution to this problem soon as it's a brand-new product and Audyssey makes a huge improvement in sound...

    I forgot:

I of course have updated to the newest "march 2012" firmware for the Onkyo unit (and made the reset after).

This sounds like a problem with the hardware in the 5009.  Probably the memory or something else with the digital board.  It will have to be checked out by Onkyo Service.

    Hello Chris.

I just opened the box to my 5509. I pluged in the audyssey mic and went through the steps of full calibration. It made it to the end and asked me to save or cancel. I hit save. Then there was an option to hit which was movie or music. I hit movie. It then said uplug mic, which I did. And it is stuck in this mode saying unplug mic and the audyssey light flashing..Please help

                     Thank,s Benjamin

Hi Benjamin, it sounds like some glitch happened.  I would suggest a full factory re-set as described in the Onkyo manual to see if it clears it up.
