Bi-amplification and MultEQ XT32

Hello Chris

Me again ! I'll receive a Denon AVR-4520 next week. With this AVR, I would like to bi-amp my main front speakers. How must I deal with bi-amp and the MultiEQ 32 ? I will use the MultiEQ pro and firmware 3.6.

Thanks for advance - Dominique

    Hi Dominique,

Denon gives detailed instructions in their manual on how to set up for bi-amping.  Once you do that, MultEQ will ping the speakers in the right way.

Thanks Chris but for the first installation I tried with Denon 4520 and its MultiEQ 32 inside. Equalization doesn't work with front speakers bi-amplified. I had to come back to simple amp. for the front speakers.

Another question: with the MultiEQ Pro, I have to use RS232 connector on the Denon 4520. Does I connect the microphone on the "Aux/Left audio" ?

    Thanks for advance. Dominique

OK now for both questions ;-)

    Hi Dominique,

I asked our tech support to check on this and they will get back to you regarding bi-amping.  Yes, the mic connects to the Aux Left.

    Hi Dominique,

Please email me back at techsupport@audyssey.com.

Are you Bi-amping on the consumer or the MultEQ Pro calibration?

How did you you setup your Bi-amp, what configuration?

    Best regards,

    Hi there,

    Same issue - AVR4520 - front speakers bi-amped.

MultiEQ 32 fails - error Surr. Back L = None.

The surround back is used for bi-amp

    Appreciate your assistance.

    Hi Sanjay,

How many channels are running in your 4520,what is the channel configuration?

According to Denon, if you channel configuration is“7.1ch/2ch bi-amp”,  .

speakers connected to Bi-amp terminal are not calibrated, therefore you cannot enable Audyssey in Audio setting.

    Hi Sanjay,

Here is what I got from the Denon engineers:

    "

Both issues you found were expected behavior in the AVR4520.

And this behavior was the same as previous products such as AVR4810 and so on.

In 7.1ch/2ch (Bi-amp) Amp assign mode, we intentionally don't apply the calibration to 2ch(Bi-amp) speakers.

So in the calibration mode, the icon of 2ch(Bi-amp) speakers will be disappeared from display of calibration menu.

This is because no chirp from 2ch(Bi-amp) speakers and chirp from normal 7.1 speakers.

In 7.1ch/2ch (Bi-amp) Amp assign mode, Bi-amp speaker outputs are related to

STEREO and DIRECT of surround mode which are play backed with 2ch outputs.

On the other hand, normal 7.1ch speaker outputs are related to the other surround modes such as STANDARD(PLIIx Cinema etc),

MCH STEREO and so on which are play backed with more than 2ch outputs.

When you choose the STEREO or DIRECT in surround mode, sound comes from Bi-amp terminal.

But speakers connected to Bi-amp terminal are not calibrated, therefore you cannot enable Audyssey in Audio setting.

When you choose the STANDARD(PLIIx Cinema etc) or MCH STEREO mode, you can enable Audyssey in Audio setting.

Sorry for confusing, but these are our expected behavior.

Thank you very much for your understanding."

    Hope

fully it will help you understand.

    Luke

Hello - That work for me now (Denon 4520) with 5.1 and front bi-amp.

I don't connect as thaid in the Denon notice but I connect front speakers bi-amplified on "Front L & R" and "Back Surround L & R".

Then I choose "Custom". After a few seconds you can select "Front" & "Surround back" for front speakers.

No problem then with MultiEQ 32 XT (in Denon or with the installer pro installation kit).

    Regards - Dominique

I am awaiting delivery of a Denon 4520 this afternoon and  I am having trouble understanding this thread.  Is what you are saying is the that the room tuning does not work for a 7.1 room with Bi-amped L & R channels?  I hope I am misunderstanding, because this would seem to be jsut plain stupid.  It would inidicate that in the most sophisticated installations the Audyssey features are useless.  Please clarify if I am wrong.  Please explain why it works this way if I am correct.

To follow up:  Would an acceptable work around be to tune the room in 7.1 with single amped L & R, then change it over to Bi-amping and re-level the over all SPL without changing the EQ?

As Dominique mentioned above, biamping works if you connect as he describes.

I know you are trying to help me, but there seems to be a language barrier here.  I have been in post-production feature film sound for 30 years, and while I have dealt with the most complicated audio issues, I find your description confusing from both a grammatical and an engineering point of view. Would you please succinctly explain the limitations of MultiEQ 32 XT when implementing  7.1 bi-amped configuration on the Denon 4520 and if there is a suitable work-around.

There are no limitations as far as XT32 is concerned.  The decision to support bi-amping or not is entirely up to the AVR maker. XT32 works with bi-amping in other products just fine. We were told "officially" by Denon that they would not turn on XT32 for front bi-amped speakers in this product.

However, it appears that Dominique has found a work around to this.
