Frequency Response

I am looking at home theater systems to go with my new 42" LCD television and am a little unsure about all the specs that are listed for AVRs. Can you explain what frequency response is, and how that will affect my system's sound?

Frequency response is a way of measuring how well a speaker performs.  The content you play has a certain balance from low to mid to high frequencies that was deliberately created by the people making it.  When you play that content over a speaker that imposes its own balance then you are not listening to the content the way it was made.  So, in general, it's good to have speakers that can reproduce the widest range of frequencies from low to high and also to do so smoothly without adding dips and bumps that would color the sound.
