2 questions re: sitting against a back wall.

It's best to have dipoles as surround speakers so that you get a more diffuse surround field.  With direct radiators it's probably best to point them as you have to avoid localizing sounds in the surrounds.

Correct on the mic distance from the back wall.

So by that, did you say its best to point the reasrs directly at the listner? or is best to point them toward the front/centre when they are level with the back wall and my seating area. If i face them toward me, then they will face each other.. if i face them straight ahead (but a little towed in toward the centre speaker) then they dont face each other but do pass my ears on each side... If that makes sense..

Basically, if you sit on a back wall with a

surround L/R next to you (direct Radiators) should you face them toward the TV, Face them direct at each other passing over the top of your head, or sit them on the back wall facing directly ahead with a little tow in toward the TV?

It's best to have diffuse sound because that better matches how the movie content is mixed.  If you don't have dipoles, then the direct radiators should face away from your ears to become less localized and more diffuse.  In your diagram, I would go with the facing forward version.

I'm going with a 7.2 DSX wide setup with my Denon 4311. I'll move the rears to face straight ahead and will add dipoles as my rear surrounds during the holidays.

I have a setup a little like above i.e sitting very close to a back wall and my 2 rear surrounds are kef 3001 speakers pointing at each other so direct at me.

I have tried to locate dipoles to match the kef setup so far drawn a blank.

So point 1 sould the speakers point at my front wides or the front centre please.

I would also like to add surround back speaker / s do you think being close to the back wall this would add benifit or would it be a waste of time.

I have available a Kef centre i could use (think i read somewhere a centre speaker is good if only 1 speaker is being used) I could also add 2 direct radiator speakers if i did so how would you recommend pointing please.

The room is 14 x 12 feet and the main wall is on the long side fires across rest of setup is

2 kef iq7 main front

2 kef iq10 wide's

2 kef 3001 highs

1 Kef sub ... should i add second sub

surround backs 2 kef 3001

Hi Allan,

The surrounds should not be localizable.  That's the reason it is recommended to use dipoles.  If that's not possible, then they should probably not point directly at the listening position.

I am not sure there is much benefit in adding a back surround speaker in this situation.  There is no harm in trying it, but I suspect it will be too distracting to have that behind you.
