Speakers for Audyssey

Hi,

 

I've just bought an Audyssey-equipped receiver (Onkyo 818) and really impressed with results, especially since my room is very poor acoustic-wise. I am now thinking if I should do some extra steps to improve sound quality even more.

 

I wonder how definition of "good" speakers system changes when using Audyssey. From what I understand it's not important to have full-range speakers anymore, maybe tonal balance match is not that important as previously, maybe in-sub room equalization is not important etc.

Do you have a view on what is important now when selecting speakers/subs for movies and music if we're talking about Audyssey-equipped receiver? What is a good subwoofer now? Which satellites are more imporant? I'm not talking about specific products or brands here, I mean actual product properties.

    Hi Konstantin,

    It is important to have matched timbre for the front three speakers (at least) and ideally for all.  This doesn't mean they have to be identical models, but perhaps from the same family within one manufacturer.

    Subwoofers and bass management make it possible to have smaller speakers (2-way).  The size of the subwoofer is the most important factor.  Other features matter less.  The woofer size will determine the sound pressure level especially in a large room or in a room connected to other rooms in the house via openings.

    What about subwoofers with their own room correction? What value such feature adds when Audyssey is used?

    I don't think these offer much value for two reasons: (1) only measure in one location and (2) only produce parametric EQ filters.  Bass needs to be sampled at multiple locations and addressed in the time and frequency domains with a more advanced filter than what is possible with PEQ.
