Great care is taken during the creation of audio content to calibrate the playback system in the dubbing stage or studio.  The speakers are carefully positioned so that they are in the specified locations at equal distances from the main listening position and their trims are adjusted so they all produce the same sound pressure level (SPL).  The best mixing rooms are also acoustically treated with absorptive and diffusive elements and equalized to produce a frequency response that is as smooth as possible.

The mixing engineers make decisions about the octave-to-octave balance and the surround presentation knowing that the same careful calibration and playback level will also be present in the movie theater.

However, these conditions are typically not found in most home listening rooms or automobiles.  Most people can’t place the speakers at the exact required locations and there is little or no acoustical treatment in their rooms.  Proper system calibration and room correction can deliver an experience in these environments that comes as close as possible to the original reference.
