No.  The microphone is calibrated to a 1/4" industry-standard measurement microphone. The correction is applied to the measurements as they are being taken. It is important to use ONLY the designated microphone that comes with the product as the calibration curve built-in to the product is specific to that microphone. It is also critical to point the microphone upwards and to place it at ear height.  Any other microphone will have different characteristics and thus will not produce the right results.

Should the microphone be re-oriented perpendicular to the front high speakers during their measurement or just it alone for the whole process?

If the Height speakers are slightly tilted towards the listening area then there's no need to adjust the mic.  If not, then you could tilt the mic back a bit right before the tones come from the Heights.  But, even if you don't there won't be a problem.

I have an onkyo 608 and svs as-eq1. I somehow misplaced my 608 calibration mic, can I use the eq1 calibration mic instead when calibrating my receiver? They look pretty similar.

Yes, the mics from these products are the same.

I got my Denon AVR590 used and the seller probably gave me the wrong mic from another Denon. It's round shaped like a hockey puck instead an Eiffel tower. Is it ok to use that to setup?

Joe, the puck mic will give totally wrong results.  You need the mic with the Audyssey logo with this AVR.  Please contact sales@audyssey.com for pricing

Hi. I have a question regarding mics.. I recently bought  2  used receivers Onkyo 3008 and Onkyo 905 with no mics.  Will any Audyssey mic model will do ? For instance, some of them are for Denon receivers... Which shouldn't really matter, but I wanted to ask you just to make sure.

The 3008 uses the same mic as all recent products with Audyssey.  It's called the ACM-1H mic and you can use one from the Denon receiver.  However, the older 905 requires the original mic that Onkyo made for that model.  It has a completely different response from the Audyssey mic and the calibration curve is stored in the AVR.  So, using a different mic will give the wrong results.

Could you give me the model number of the mic for Onkyo 905 ?

The Onkyo TX-NR905 uses the Onkyo setup mic, please contact Onkyo Support to pick up this mic.

I purchased an used tx-sr805 and a new tx-nr809.  I notice they use different mic.  I also understand that I  should use the mic that comes with the receiver. 

However for the sake of it, I decided to test and calibrate the 805 with the original mic.  The sound was ok, but then I did the same test (same position, etc.) with the mic that came with the 809, it was night and day.  The test with 809 was much much better.  I feel like I was in the movie theater there for a second.  Both with the same equipment, same movies, same section of the movie.  Not just me but all the people in the room was able to tell the difference and agree the calibration with 809 was much better.

Now that kinda threw me off.  I know I shouldn't be using the mic from different model, but that was a huge difference.

I ended up returning the 809 due to other problems. 

Now I am wondering if I should buy a mic from the 809 model for future use.  Is the mic that came with 805 is having problem you think? 

Can you please shed some light on this?

Hard to know what caused the difference.  If I'm not mistaken, the 805 mic is from Onkyo (the black puck shaped one, right?).  It has a completely different response from the Audyssey mic that comes with the 809 and so the internal calibration curve in the 805 would be totally wrong for the Audyssey mic.

Yes.  The mic that came with 805 is the about ~1" high like the black puck.  The one that came with 809 is taller ~3" high, but I can't remember what color it was.  If I have to guess it's also black.

So what you're saying the mic in 805 is Onkyo mic.  The mic from 809 is Audyssey mic? or both are from Onkyo, just different shape?

Do all mic has Audyssey logo (even the black puck shape one for tx-sr805)?  Mine does not.  I just says MIC 5000.  I remember reading somewhere that Onkyo back then shipped out wrong mic for certain receiver in the 80x series.  Maybe this is the reason my system sounds better with the 809 mic instead with its own mic?

Both Audyssey and Onkyo selling this mic.  Does it matter where to buy from or they're in fact the same mic?

The early mics were not made by Audyssey and have no Audyssey logo.  The mic you have is the correct mic for the 805.  Audyssey does not sell this mic.
