Volume adjustment

Why can’t I adjust the volume on my iPhone/iPod when it’s connected to the Audio Dock?

When you dock your iPhone or iPod on the Apple dock connector, the Audio Dock automatically sets the volume on your iPhone/iPod to a prescribed fixed level, regardless of its setting prior to docking. (You’ll notice the volume functionality on your iPhone or iPod is disabled while it’s docked.)  This feature allows one of Audyssey’s key technologies, Dynamic EQ, to work properly. If you want to adjust the playback level up or down, simply use the volume buttons on the Audio Dock or on the remote. Once you undock your iPhone or iPod, it will return its level to wherever you left it prior to docking.

This does not answer the question.  It merely restates the problem.  I need to adjust the level on my iphone while docked.  There is a valid reason.  Is there an app that will play my mp3 files and allow me to adjust the volume on the iphone?

    Hi Larry,

No, there is no app to do this.  One of the main Audyssey technologies (Dynamic EQ) needs to know the exact volume level.  The iPhone does not report this and so we disable it.  If we did not, then the dock would not sound right.

Perhaps if you tell me the reason you want to do this on the phone, I can try to think of a better answer.

The reason is I use Sony S-Air wireless to broadcast my music to my various stereo systems.  There are four stereos and two separate subwoofers -- all on their own receivers.  So, unless I want to run around and adjust the volume on six separate units, I need to adjust the volume on the input side.  This works fine on my pc, whether I'm using iTunes or Windows Media Player, but the Sony docking station for my iPhone 3 (which was just delegated to being a media server by my upgrading to an iPhone 5) does not allow volume adjustment and the iPhone volume control is disabled as soon as I dock it.  A very sucky situation.  So, unless I can find an app to play my music on a docking station that allows volume control I am going to have to return the docking station and ask for my money back.  It works great otherwise, but there's just no way to turn the volume down.  Crappy.  Crumby.  Colossally bad.
