Please make sure that your Airport Extreme or Airport Express firmware is 7.6.1 or later.
but how do you load the firmware?

I've started getting drop outs after 2 seconds of audio. I have a second generation Airport Extreme running 7.6.1. I'm using the iPhone 5 (6.0.1).
Any help would be great. This is really frustrating.
Drop-out's can be caused by increase in network traffic. You may want to try the following:
1. Move the unit closer to Wi-Fi access point.
2. Power Cycle the unit. Air Dock should automatically reconnect to your Wi-Fi network with the previously configured AirPlay settings.
